All-in on a single goal: The Fastest Climbing Wheels

884.8g Per Pair

A Climber's Dream

Us climbers are a simple bunch. We just want to go up hills fast. We want a light bike that's stiff and seemingly floats up the climbs. We recognize that aero is important but not at the cost of added grams. We don't need wheels that are overbuilt to handle 100kg sprinters.

At some point the industry seemingly forgot us. Shallow depth wheels all but disappeared. After the transition to disc brakes the mentality seemed to be "Well, the bikes are all heavy now so nobody cares about weight."

We care.

Thus started a 2-year journey to make the ultimate climbing wheels for the disc brake era. After countless iterations, painstaking development and real-world testing by a UCI World Champion - The Arcaris 8848 wheelset was born.

Features

Ridiculously Light

Achieving sub-900g is no easy feat. From the superlight rim to the meticulous machining of the hubs. No stone was left unturned in the search for weight savings.

VONOA Carbon Spokes¹

The pinnacle of carbon spokes from just 1.9g per spoke yet with greater tensile strength than steel spokes. These spokes provide snappy acceleration and keep the weight down.

Powered by H-WORKS²

We worked with the legendary H-WORKS to design a bespoke hub to meet the unique demands of climbers. Light, reliable and with 2:1 spoke lacing on the rear wheel.

VAMspeed Rim Profiles

At the speeds the world's best climb at, you can't ignore aero. Our wind-tunnel tested rims are optimized to perform at >5w/kg climbing speeds and yaw angles.

Optiply Technology

Our Optiply Layup Technology uses precision placement of high-modulous plies to create a super-light, high-performance rim.

DSR-Lock Technology

Weight is everything, but safety always comes first. Our patent-pending DSR-Lock solution ensures the spokes are captive in the hub.

Hooked Tubeless Ready Rim

The 23mm internal and 28mm external rim width allows optimum compatibility with 25-28c tires favoured by climbers. The hooked profile gives peace of mind for those who prefer to run tubeless.

A True Climber's Wheel

A recommended rider weight of 75kg and below allows us to tune the ride characteristics of the wheel to give a comfortable ride not usually associated with carbon spokes. Perfect for an Everesting or a long day in the alps.

Is lighter faster?

Aero is not everything.

It’s long been claimed that aero is everything however is that true when things start going uphill? We visited the wind tunnel and broke out the spreadsheets to find out.

Wind tunnel testing

At 45k/h with 0 degree yaw, the 8848 will lose out to a 60mm deep aero wheelset. The difference is about 10 watts or about 2% of total aero drag. However, most of us don’t climb at 45km/h, and more varied yaw angles are more common at slower climbing speeds.

Thanks to the VAMspeed rim profiles, at 10 degrees of yaw angle the difference between the aero wheels and the climbing wheels is negligible with the climbing wheels even being faster than the aero wheels at certain angles.

However, when the road goes up, lightweight is king. For a 65kg rider at 5w/kg, at just 3.8% gradient gravity resistance overtakes aerodynamic drag as the biggest factor slowing you down. For the same rider, when the gradient gets to 4.7% the gravity resistance is already double the aerodynamic drag.

Its easy to see then how the climbing wheels soon come into their own. With over half a kilo advantage over their aero counterparts they allow you to lower the gravitational resistance and climb faster, higher and longer than ever before.

What’s faster for you?

Which version is right for me?

If you're sub-75kg the base version is a great choice. Less than 950g and will probably be seriously lighter than anything you've ridden before. However, if you want the absolute best go for the Pro version. It has upgrades all around that drop the weight to sub-900g while improving rolling performance with hybrid ceramic bearings and improving aero performance with hidden spoke nipples. The metal fixings on the spokes are upgraded from aluminium to titanium

If you're 75-95kg, the Max version is for you. A higher spoke count results in a stronger wheel. To offset the weight of the extra steel spokes, the most suitable hub is the NONPLUS hubs (made in Germany) and Sapim CX-Super spokes (also made in Europe.) Unfortunately these hubs and spokes are not cheap, thus the Max also comes with a big price tag.

Warranty

Each wheelset comes with a two-year limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects. It does not cover the wheels from misuse or accidental damage. If you do accidentally damage your wheels, get in touch with us with your proof of purchase and we will asses the damage and find a solution to get you back on the road as quickly and cheaply as possible.
